Cleaning Up These Links…

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

I use a plugin here at Patrick Says that goes through old posts and checks all the links looking for broken ones. I have to tell you that with an archive like I have (over 1,200 posts), there are a ton of broken links (almost 900 right now). Now they worked when I put them in the post originally, just for some reason, now they don’t. I’ve narrowed it down to a couple reasons:

  • The blogger changed their URL structure. For example, default WordPress blogs use p=post number, but here we use a chronlogical structure such as 2011/06/08/title of post.
  • Some articles have just been removed.
  • Bigger sites don’t seem to like being linked, like CNN for example. I notice a lot of those large news sites coming up as broken.

The plugin is pretty cool. If it finds a site that’s broken, it strikesout the text. Like for example, my defunct writing blog, Dragonfly Porno.

So, if you’re going through old posts and something that seems like it should be linked isn’t, that’s probably a formerly working link. The plugin can remove the link entirely for you and I’m in the process of doing that this summer. Here’s a link to the plugin itself. I highly recommend it.

More Babbling…

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

It’s 1am in the morning. Why am I up? I guess I feel something needs to get posted on this blog before I can get some sleep. But sometimes, I will do anything to not post. I just watched an amazingly horrid movie on Netflix. I could have used that 90+ minutes to write something. But when you don’t want to write, you don’t want to write. Know what I mean?

Ever revisit something from long ago and find that it’s totally different than you remember it? I was listening to Rdio tonight. It’s a music service that lets you make playlists and stream music over your phone and sync for offline play and just a really great service for a couple bucks a month.

Anyway, for whatever reason, I was thinking about Kristeen Young. She’s a musical artist who is from Saint Louis. I saw her in concert at a festival back in 2000. She’s very odd. The songs are heavy in piano and drums. She screeches a lot. Anyway, she left Saint Louis for New York around 2001 and I was listening again to her first album ‘Meet Miss Young And Her All Boy Band’. Back in 2000 when I first heard this album, I hated it. Now listening to it, I see there are some really strong, amazing tracks. There’s still some crap, but it’s not wholly terrible.

So, there’s that. I guess that’s enough for me to get some sleep. Night.

Google Plus One Equals Heck Yes…

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

So, Google has released a +1 feature that you can embed on your sites to let people recommend your site or article. In Google’s words:

The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.”

Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1′s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.

I’ve added it to the site here, so if you enjoy an article, why not give it a little +1 love and help a brother out. Thanks.
