Cleaning Up These Links…
Wednesday, June 8th, 2011I use a plugin here at Patrick Says that goes through old posts and checks all the links looking for broken ones. I have to tell you that with an archive like I have (over 1,200 posts), there are a ton of broken links (almost 900 right now). Now they worked when I put them in the post originally, just for some reason, now they don’t. I’ve narrowed it down to a couple reasons:
- The blogger changed their URL structure. For example, default WordPress blogs use p=post number, but here we use a chronlogical structure such as 2011/06/08/title of post.
- Some articles have just been removed.
- Bigger sites don’t seem to like being linked, like CNN for example. I notice a lot of those large news sites coming up as broken.
The plugin is pretty cool. If it finds a site that’s broken, it strikesout the text. Like for example, my defunct writing blog, Dragonfly Porno.
So, if you’re going through old posts and something that seems like it should be linked isn’t, that’s probably a formerly working link. The plugin can remove the link entirely for you and I’m in the process of doing that this summer. Here’s a link to the plugin itself. I highly recommend it.
