Black Friday…

I’ve been wanting to talk about this video for awhile. It’s been all the rage on the Internet back channels and now it seems to be exploding on everybody else. No one seems to know what to make of it. Watch it first and then we’ll discuss. Be warned: this girl cannot carry a tune.

Still here? Cool. So, the Internet is all abuzz about this video. As of this posting, it’s at 39 MILLION views. No one seems to know if it’s a serious music video, a parody or some kind of joke. Lyrically, it’s a train wreck. ‘Which seat can I take?’ OMG. Pure hilarity. And this verse:

Yesterday was Thursday,
Today it is Friday,
We we we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today.
Tomorrow is Saturday,
And Sunday comes afterwards.

Holy crap, that is pure awesome. Maybe.
Is this thing a joke?

Update: I think it’s a joke. The user who posted the ‘official video’ for Rebecca Black also has about four other pathetic teenage girls attempting to sing. Man, I hope it’s a joke.

Another update: some of the other girls aren’t terrible. Hmmm…

I thought it would play great on Sesame Street. It definitely will help with days of the week. I was a little concerned about the consternation over choice of seating in the car. Saw it on Tosh’s website first, but that doesn’t make it real, KWIM?

The seat dilemma gets ridiculed pretty regular on Tumblr.

Certainly NOT my cup of tea, but I can see how tweens might like it…but heck, I LOVE Nickelback, so what do I know!?! :)

I don’t think it’s a joke. Although the music could have been written using a simple $80 Magix Music Maker software package, the video production looks too complicated for an amateur. There’s lots of backlighting and use of props. It reminds me of “I’m a Barbie girl” and “McDonald’s, McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza Hut”.

I had never heard that ‘McDonald’s’ song before. I want my three minutes back.

I think I saw it last week on Failblog or something. So I went looking for it and while I couldn’t make it thru the whole video based on the singing/auto tuning I didn’t understand why all the hate.

Sure it’s a retarded song. But so are the songs on Yo Gabba Gabba and every other kids show.

If it’s a joke. Booyah!!! to the internets… If it’s not, oh well.. At least she has a meme..

She will now forever be remembered. Or at least for six months or so.

So the deal is that she apparently recorded this as a funny way to share her excitement for an upcoming party with her girlfriends.
She certainly has had more than a fair share of publicity over it, even getting radio airtime in a few cases.
There was a piece on NPR last week which talked about artists who were plucked from obscurity, and she was one of them….not sure if that means we should expect to hear more nonsense or what, but I hope not. But the gist was, this was never intended to be viewed by anyone other than her circle of friends.
