Bust Out Dat Forty…

Not an actual picture from the hospital.

So, when The Wife was in the hospital, I would visit most every day. And every day, walking into the hospital, you would have to pass by all the patients who were out smoking. You’d know they were patients because they would be wearing hospital gowns and some would be dragging that wheeled thing with medications on it.

And that’s when the thought occurred to me. I’m all for personal rights and far be it from me to take away someone’s right to light up, but why are patients allowed to go outside and smoke. You’re in a building where the goal is to get you healthy and you’re out there blackening your lungs. Seems kind of silly. I mean, they certainly wouldn’t let the patients go out and kick back with a cooler full of fine Budweiser products. You’d think that was ridiculous, but the smoking thing doesn’t faze anyone?

Hmmm. Weird.

On the other hand, maybe they could try an electronic cigarette or even, you know, quit. But what do I know?

I agree! I also could not help but notice that the guy in the picture is smoking on a bench right under not one but two “no smoking” signs.

Well, not everyone expects to get sick and be hospitalized right there in the middle of their addiction, you know. 8-) .-= BeccA’s Buzz´s last blog …With moving comes new furniture needs. =-.

The people taking off their oxygen to smoke are the ones that get me. And you see it all the time!

Whenever I walk by them, I feel a blend of pity and complete and utter confusion…it baffles me… And I know it’s outside, but the stinky cig smell still gets all over me.

The hospitals around here have a no smoking on the grounds policy – this means that if you want to smoke, you basically have to cross the street, so no one on IV poles, etc., but I am sure some patients still go out to smoke. I am always shocked at the number of doctors and nurses that smoke; they see what it does to the patients, and that doesn’t stop them?

Interestingly, at a recent birth I was at, one of the relatives brought and drank a beer. No lie. He said “Am I allowed to have this in here?” I told him I’d never really asked, but probably no. So he hid it and only drank when the nurses weren’t around.

I just finished reading the last of the Stig Larson books and in it, someone is hospitalized and is a smoker. The hospital offered to get her nicotine gum. I thought that made a good amount of sense.
