Comments A-Hoy!
So, I was reading an article over at Weblog Tools Collection about comments and the arguments for and against closing them. And it makes the very good point that closing comments isn’t really necessary. Akismet does a great job at filtering the spammers right into their proper place and cutting off your comments can result in real people not being able to interact on an older post.
And like jobs in healthcare, that is something I don’t want. (Validate me!)

There’s not a lot of value in going to old posts and closing down comments. There might be if that post was still seeing a lot of comment traffic perhaps or the spammers had taken it over.
I have closed down just a few because of smart spammers. On the other hand, there are a few that I never opened comments on. Typically these would be posts I’m not expecting to draw any conversation or I don’t want to them to, and likely I’m not interested in any search traffic via that post.

I’ve had a few I intentionally never opened comments on. Usually, they were intensely personal and not subject to any criticism or comment.

Just think if I would have closed comments on my Peyton Manning post, I wouldn’t have had the ‘inside’ scoop! (grosse)
