When You Realize, It’s Too Late…

A friend on Facebook was lamenting the loss of a lot of family photos when something went wrong on her computer. And she had no backups. People, I don’t know how many times you need to hear it, but you NEED to have backups of your files. Not everything. Just the irreplaceable data. If you running right now without backups, stop reading this post and go buy an external drive. It’s not like natural hair loss treatment, which I suppose can be hard to find. Everybody sells external drives and the prices have plummeted.

There is NO reason not to be backing up your stuff.
It’s easy. It’s cheap. It’s essential.

If you need help, ask in the comments. But get a backup.

Sound advice. Nothing feels worse than realizing your data is gone. Especially because when it happens you know that you have only yourself to blame. It is so preventable and there are so many ways to get the job done.

That reminds me, I need to go run a backup.

So, then you think that backing up to an external hard drive will suffice? I need to re back-up, but I keep the important stuff on an external hard drive — never felt like it was quite enough. Thoughts?

Good point. IDEALLY, you’d want that external drive as a backup, but then send it off-site in case of a fire or something. But otherwise, I’d say the odds of both drives failing around the same time is pretty rare.

External backup drives are cheap these days and easy to find. Most run off of USB and/or Firewire. For a laptop, you don’t need a huge external drive. Something twice the size of the HD should suffice.

Passport is a good brand and super easy to use for a laptop.

I haven’t used Passport. I like Seagate and Western Digital, but I’m not particularly brand-loyal.
