Update On The Forties…
Remember that whole Forty By Forty project? The idea was to create either forty chapters of a book or lose forty pounds by my 40th birthday in October. Well, that kind of fell apart. I suppose, in theory, I could still try, but right now, my stress has never been higher and I’m overeating pretty much all the time.
As for writing, I got involved with a writing group. Which is a great idea. My complaint is that we’re writing about ourselves and to be honest, my life is about as exciting as plasma mounts. You get the idea. I’m boring.
I fancy myself a fiction writer. Even if I don’t actually produce…

Writing about yourself is good practice because you are the character that you know best.

So then write about your adventures in search of the perfect plasma mount.. It would be cool if it was in 3D.. That’s the rage now you know..

Patrick,
When we were in high school I found a Richard Wright book in the Main Library downtown. The book was Black Boy, his autobiography. He was poor, Black and smart. I loved the book because I was poor, Black and smart (or so I have been trying to convince myself).
The point I am trying to relate is this, your story is just that, YOUR STORY. Write it. Write it well and someone will be able to relate.
After finding one of Wright’s books I found all of his books and read each one. At the time it was a saving grace, that kept me from utter despair.
I would definitely like to read your story. Write it.

Patrick,
I know how you feel because my childhood seems boring and the parts that are interesting, I may not want to share! Just write for the joy of the project, not focusing on how anyone will receive it. There’s something for everyone out there. If no one else finds it entertaining, at least the memories will bring a smile to your face. That will make it worthwhile in the end. That’s how I am choosing to view it!
