What To Look For In Hosting…

If your looking for web hosting and you haven’t made a decision, perhaps you should think about the things you’re looking for in your hosting company. Here’s some of what KVCHosting offers and my thoughts on each point.

  1. Free hosting with no banner ads – I have a hard time believing this one as I’ve rarely experienced this with hosts. If it’s truly ad-free, that would be pretty sweet. But it’s important to remember that sometimes, you get what you pay for.
  2. Guaranteed 99.99% uptime – This is one of those things that really doesn’t matter until your site has gone offline. I’ve been pretty lucky with my host, so this 99.99% KVCHosting offers is great, as long as its coupled with good service when it does go down.
  3. Level 3 support and 30-minute response time – This is probably the most critical aspect of your hosting. You need to know that when your site is down, you can quickly get it back up. Having a response pre-determined gives you both confidence and a place to begin yelling if your needs aren’t being met.

Those are the the three things I would consider most important in a host. What are your key features you need and what has your experience with your hosts been? Leave it in the comments.

I’m with Godaddy and it’s amazing! I don’t have to worry about #3 because I have 24/7 call in support!

Godaddy sucks if you go anything below the VD accounts. They have free hosting but the entire header of your website is a large ad.

The support for the VD accounts isn’t very good! It’s very limited. It’s odd with Godaddy the more you pay the less support is offered.

    Nice list Patrick!

Really, with technologies like virtualization and cloud computing, there’s no reason that a host shouldn’t be up at least 99.99% of the time. Which is approximately one full day of outage per year. If they can’t guarantee that, then they’re probably running a pile of old towers in a former supply closet and should be avoided. Of course, in that case, they’d probably still throw the 99.99% figure out there and then act surprised when you tell them that you’ve observed 95% uptime.

What would I like in a host? I desire free MySQL. The place I’m using now considers that a substantial add-on.
