Everything Old Is New Again?

If you’re like me (male and over 200 pounds), you probably have a lot of used CDs and DVDs sitting around your house. Even if you’re not like me, there’s a good chance this stuff is sitting around your house as well.

The truth is that I don’t know why I buy CDs and DVDs in the first place. Well, the CDs I can understand. The DVDs however make no sense. I buy them and they just sit on the shelf. I own some greats like ‘Office Space‘ and ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail‘ and I’ve watched each of them maybe once ever. It’s not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just that once I’ve seen them, I don’t really need to watch them again.

Well, now there is another option: AbundaTrade. The idea is that you can trade your used stuff and get new stuff. You provide them with UPCs for your CDs and DVDs and they tell you how many ‘credits’ you can get. Credits can be used to purchase things on their website like iPods and other electronic items.

As a test, I submitted a list of eleven DVDs I own. After submitting the list, I was told these would be worth a total of 7.75 credits. For comparison, an Apple 8GB Touch would cost me 150 credits, or approximately 209 more DVDs. You do the math. If you’ve got a lot of DVDs and CDs collecting dust in your place, there could be some value. Also, if you’re short on credits, you can make up the difference with cash.

So, there are options.

You can go check it out and submit a list. You’re not committed after submitting the list. See what kind of value your stuff has. Also, according to their site, they have begun to accept books as well.

It’s up to you, but what could it hurt?

What could it hurt? Not a thing. It’s only a flesh wound.

It’s an interresting concept for sure. I’m not sure my small collection would amount to much. I’d be doing better to keep them even if I don’t watch/listen to them very often. :)

My tiny collection is going nowhere as well. Perhaps this service is more geared toward the people who have racked up hundreds of DVDs and CDs and are looking to change to digital formats.

Hubby wants a blu-ray player…I’m thinking “well, we already have all these movies we don’t really watch as it is”. Besides, just how much better are the Disney films going to look in blu-ray anyhow? You know it will just be the kids watching DVD’s in the immediate future. The parents? fo-gettabout it…we’re sleeping!
