I Gotta Stop Reading The Classics…

Not just reading, but watching them too. Let’s start there.

A couple years back, The Wife and I decided we should watch some of the greatest films of all-time. It was probably after we’d seen one of those AFI specials. So, we pick ‘Casablanca’, considered by many to be one of the greatest romance pictures ever.

Wow. Wow. Halfway through and we’re both bored out of our minds.

It was so bad that given the option to watch ‘Casablanca’ or be given a hard kick to my family jewels, I would take the kick. Why? Because that pain would only last about twenty minutes.

Books. Books. Books. Same deal. I’ll explain.

For some reason, I felt the need to read ‘the greats’ a couple years back. The first one I picked was J.D. Salinger’s masterpiece, ‘The Catcher In The Rye’. I read the entire book waiting for the greatness. Instead, I got a heaping helping of boredom, with a side of what the hell?

Apparently, I didn’t learn my lesson because right now, I’m reading ‘Lolita’. Ugh. Controversial and a masterpiece of literature, I’m forty pages in and ready to give up. I’d rather read literature about pet supplies. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not.

I hear ya, I haven’t seen most of those classics either but I don’t *really* feel all that cheated. Just don’t ever watch ‘A Thin Red Line’ seriously, I’ll come kick you in the family jewels just for considering it.

The couple movies I’ve tried to watch, I struggled through too. I did like Sound of Music. :)

‘Sound of Music’? Yeah, I’ll still take that kick to the jewels, thanks.
