Thoughts On ‘Family Guy: Star Wars’…

Family Guy Star Wars

Well, a couple weeks back, the season premiere of ‘Family Guy’ aired on Fox and it was a doozy. The folks over at ‘Family Guy’ did a reverent AND hilarious spoof of the original ‘Star Wars’. I have some thoughts on the episode, so entertain me as a television critic.

Overall, the episode was great. There are a plethora of inside jokes (parsec as unit of distance, not time) and plenty of laughs for the non-Star Wars person (if such a thing even exists). I think one of the funnier aspects is the frame-for-frame replication in many shots. It’s really quite an homage to Lucas. Another nod is the frequent use of the wipe, which Lucas loves and almost always can be found in his films. There is also a dance number lifted almost entirely from the climax of ‘Dirty Dancing’ that is pretty funny.

Overall, I loved it. It’s still saved on the TiVo and probably will be for awhile.

It was a great episode! Things like that make me wish I had a dvr.

As a Mel Brooks fan, I was skeptical that there was anything funny left about Star Wars. But I loved it.

Maybe I just love Brian as Chewie… sigh… I love that dog.

I love Mel Brooks, but I found ‘Spaceballs’ (which I assume you are referencing) a little weak for a Mel Brooks offering. Just my take on it, though.

For all I know, you are right. I saw Spaceballs the first time when I was, maybe 7 or 8. My parents both are screw-ball comedy people, so we saw all that kind of stuff, but this was my first Mel Brooks. If I was older and more critical before I feel in love with it, I’d likely fill different.

On an unrelated note, I blame my parents for my perverted sense of humor. Who takes small children to see The Naked Gun in the theater?
