When It Rains, It Pours…

Just got a call from The Wife. Apparently, the home air conditioning unit is dead. And with new environmental regulations, they have to replace the furnace as well. What the f*ck?!? I’m all for the environment, but I can’t swing $3600 right now.
Time to call around. Got a good company in the Saint Louis area you’d recommend?

It’s only $3600 to replace both? Consider yourself lucky. When our furnace caught fire this past January, it cost $6500 to replace both the furnace and ac unit. And this was about four days after I lost my job. Fun, fun.
I hope you find someone running a really great deal – although it sounds like that is a really great deal, even if it is a lot of money. The joys of homeownership!

Maybe stuff is just cheaper in the Midwest?

I’ve called the Wife with referral numbers. Hopefully, something will work out inexpensively!

I’m probably too late with this advice, but get a second opinion. I work in HVAC and can’t think of what regulations this guy’s referring to.
What’s the age of your unit, email me what details you can.
I can’t recommend a local company, but can ask about the regs.
Something doesn’t seem right here. I’ll give you an example, if you have a forced hot air heating system with an A coil in the duct for your Evap, and it’s your compressor that’s shot, then you only need to reclaim the refrigerant, replace the compressor and condenser (A/C) unit and at worst the part of duct work that is around the inside A coil.
Good luck
Joe

Sorry, Patrick. Its times like these it helps to live in a small town where everyone knows the Air conditioning/heating guy.

No worries. We found a friend’s company that fixed it. Still hurt, but at least it was only $800 worth of hurt.
