Old People And Their Foods…

My mom used to make the nastiest sandwich when I was a kid. I think it’s a throwback to ‘the old days’, whatever that means. I just know it made me want to throw up.

Step 1: Start with bread…that’s fine.
Step 2: Add a slice of raw onion…not my thing, but still not unheard of.
Step 3: Add raw ground beef.

I know. You’re waiting for the part where you cook the sandwich. It ain’t coming.

Step 4. Eat the sandwich.

Blech! Bllleeecchhh!

Here’s a picture of steak tartare (a very similar dish) so you get the full visual:

When I was a kid, mom used to be a big supporter of Hamburger Helper meals and meatloaf. I think one of our favorite things, though, was eating bits of raw hamburger before the meal was put in the oven/on the stove. Gross? Maybe, but the fresh meat was tasty.
Having said that, however, I would never eat a whole ‘raw meat sandwich’ – little nibbles is the limit here – that’s just nasty.

    Gross Wendy. Ew… :P

Isn’t it bad to eat uncooked beef? That stuff looks gross.

As I understand it, the ground beef is processed, so it’s not as deadly as, say, raw steak. But I’m no expert. Hence, I cook my meats.

My Dad used to do that. But, he would add salt, lots of pepper and mayo. Even nastier!

Mayo, itself, is nasty. Bring on the Whip of Miracle!

The first time I ever saw someone eat a little bit of raw ground meat was Shell. I thought I was gonna hurl.
I think ground meat is the most dangerous. See if meat comes in contact with contamination, it’s contaminated on the outside. So a steak that’s cooked even tar tar is simply seared on the outside killing those contaminates. But if you take that meat and grind it, you are essentially taking the contamination and mixing it throughout the meat. That’s why you are supposed to cook ground meat to certain internal temps. to kill the germs inside the meat. It’s supposedly safer to eat tar tar steaks than ground anything.
