Censored Words…

We have two young children in the house. And as a result, we have censored words. Words that the little ones are not allowed to use. Does everyone with kids have this? What are yours?

Ours, at the moment, are: dumb, obviously all the curse words, stupid, variants of the curse words (i.e. friggin’, darn, shoot), shut up. My wife petitioned for hate, but I think that’s a little silly. She also tried for ukulele, but I had to draw the line somewhere. A man has got to know his limits.

So, what words can your kids not use?

    “Ukulele”? That made me laugh.

“Shut up” is a HUGE no-no in my household, and the swear words too. I don’t think we have anything else actually… other than “no swear words in other languages”…

(as in, I know the words, didn’t realise Americans found them offensive)

In your part of the world, you don’t prohibit kids from using certain words if they’re under a certain age?

Around here, the kids are not allowed to say … well anything! They are cats people, cats don’t really talk. Oh, and fishies, the fishies aren’t allowed to talk either. You can imagine how small I had to cut the DUCT tape for them.

I agree with your wife about “hate.” I went to Catholic school, and some nun along the way told me that hate means you want someone to die and go to hell. It really seemed to resonate in my little twisted brain, and I don’t say it. Some day when we’re bored at work, I can tell you all about some of the other scare tactics they used on us. :)

We don’t allow “shut up” either. Shea came home from school upset one day and said that someone said the “s” word…not that one….it was “shut up.” We had to have the talk that it wasn’t a cuss word, just not nice.

Yeh most parents will; some parents will ban shut up, that sort of things.

I just didn’t realise that the words shoot and darn belong in that category.

My parents were the generally considered stricter than all my classmates and friends (they all got to watch the TV shows I couldn’t). They allowed words such as peed, or damn. But they drew the line at piss and bastard.
