Guilty Pleasures…

So, the discussion came up about favorite movies. I though I might profile one of my favorite all-time films. But which one to pick becomes very hard. I enjoy a lot of varied movies. I suppose part of the selection criteria is whether I can find a clip of it on YouTube.

So I’m picking ‘Muriel’s Wedding’. It’s a guilty pleasure film for me. As a guy, I’m not supposed to like chick flicks that much. But this one is great. It’s the story of Muriel, an unattractive girl from a dysfunctional home who longs to escape and hides away in Abba songs. Dissed by her so-called friends, she takes a trip (where her no-longer-friends are also vacationing) and makes a new friend, Ronda, who helps her break out of her shell. In this scene, they meet and solidify their friendship.

(WARNING: Not Safe For Kids)

The rest of the movie chronicles Muriel and Ronda’s lives as they grow together and apart and ultimately figure out what they want from life. It’s a good one.

I just saw this on TV! You know, I don’t think this is a chick flick at all. It’s not bouncy and happy and light and romantic. It’s just a movie with a woman as the title character. It’s depressing and hard to watch sometimes and while there are up moments, it’s not a true comedy. I do like it quite a bit, I just don’t think it’s a true chick flick.

Oh, and I think Toni Collete is amazing. Her facial expressions break my heart.

The transformation is mind-blowing to me. She’s this really quite ugly girl and then when they move, she’s pretty cute. Obviously, this is intentional on the director’s part, but still really wild.
