Grammar Nazi…

One more time, people, so we’re all crystal clear on this one.

your = possessive
example: Is that your car? That’s nice.

you’re = the contraction of ‘you are’
example: You’re driving that car? You’re braver than I thought.

Got it? While we’re at it, you can have a great idea. The situation is ideal. We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.

    You know, since I’m not in school anymore (yes, I’m referring to high school since I have little college experience to draw from) I can’t seem to remember how to spell much at all! I make alot of very simple spelling mistakes. I actually find it very frustrating. I can speak better than can type…without spell check that is! I have actually changed the wording on things before, because I couldn’t remember how to spell what I actually wanted to say. It’s embarrassing but I sometimes open up my MS Word program and type out a sentence using the word in question, just to see if they auto correct it or suggest a different spelling!!! Ugh!

    No, no, no, it’s a great IDEAR, silly. If you feel this strongly about grammar (and brother, I hear you, I do), read “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” by Lynne Truss. Also for fans of dry English wit.

    Read? Did you say read? Yuuuuuuuuuuucko, for realsies!
    Well, that’s not entirely true. There are sometimes when I like to read…but it usually involves pictures.

    Becca, that’s what MSWord is for! We all have that happen sometimes, even editors who get paid to correct the writing of others. I have word open and a dictionary on my desk at all times. I’m a terrible speller.

    I slip on the your/you’re and there/their/they’re sometimes when I’m writing even though it drives me nuts when I see others do it. Sometimes I’m just thinking too fast, but if I see it in one of my posts later on, I’ll fix it and repub, at least I’m like THAT.

    I don’t usually slip on those examples in particular, it’s mostly basic spelling issues with me. I must admit, I learned to read and spell using phonics…and I still use it today! If I’m just not sure if a word has a double consonant or some other odd question, I will clap my hands to the syllables to check it out LOL
    I’m STILL hooked on phonics, baby!

    I hope this doesn’t come across as an obnoxious shill, but the less said sooner mended:

    The Care and Feeding of Apostrophes, my own attempt to combat the plague of apostrophe abuse sweeping the net.

    BeccaGirl, for what it’s worth, I included pictures. ;)
